Lapband Surgery
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a surgical treatment for obesity that is becoming increasingly popular. LAGB is done via keyhole surgery. A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, reducing the capacity of the stomach. The band ensures a feeling of fullness after eating a small amount of food.
The band can prevent physical hunger but does not address emotional eating or 'head hunger'. Patents we see often sabotage their own weight loss for a variety of reasons.
Patients seen often experience the following:
- Emotional/Non-hungry eating patterns
- Sabotage by people in their lives (partners, friends, family members)
- Lack of motivation to engage in physical activity
- Low self esteem
- Rigid dieting beliefs that can inhibit weight loss and create feelings of guilt
- Unrealistic expectations
- Experiencing lapses or plateaus in weight.
A note on Non-Hungry Eating or 'head hunger'
It is not uncommon for people to eat when they are not physically hungry - often when they feel stressed, bored or lonely. Non-hungry eating includes overeating, grazing, picking, nibbling and binging. When food is used on a daily basis to cope with situations or feelings this can create difficulties for people. Often feeling guilty or 'bad' about emotional eating can make people eat more of that type of food. This is an area that we assist the majority of clients with.
